Ecografia pittorica No. 1, 2 and 3 (Pictorial ultrasound)
2022, oil on canvas, (3x) 70x100 cm Installation view of the works at Spazio Officina, Chiasso, Group Exhibition ‘‘Le stanze dell’arte - Premio giovani artisti - Genesi creativa (2022)’’, by Antonio d’Avossa and Nicoletta Ossanna Cavadini Collection of m.a.x. museo These three works are the result of a reflection on the image as an instrument of mediation, interface and reproduction, from which the use of ultrasound as a pictorial metaphor for artistic creation, an icon of birth.
On an unprimed cotton canvas a painted silhouette adopts the most iconic form of the visual result of an ultrasound scan, that of obstetric ultrasound. In the same way that the obstetric ultrasound is the elaboration of an image from ultrasound echoes inside the uterus, so the pictorial strokes that ‘’draw’’ the ultrasound are the visual translation of the artist’s inner world that remains to take shape. The techniques used for each painting belong to the author’s pictorial alphabet but are not consolidated in these works into a recognizable figure or form. The use of virgin canvas and the three primary colors wants to emphasize this generative aspect. The painted space wants to be a space in which the pictorial presence is in power. These ultrasounds are part of a pictorial research that involves symbolic-graphic elements to contrast the classical representation and think about the concept of icon and presentation. With these ultrasounds I have therefore tried to subvert the representation by trying to implode the relationship between model and copy, taking as a model of my painting something that is not only already an image, but is also already a copy. |
